Week of Jan 28 - Feb 1

Inquiry
Inuit Artifacts

This week we began examining many different Inuit artifacts, asking ourselves what they are used for, shat they are made out of and thinking about what I wonder questions we may have about the artifacts.  For each artifact we will be sketching and writing two I thinks and one I wonder about what we are examining.  After examining the artifacts we will begin to learn more about them, what they are called in Inuktitut, and what function they served in Inuit culture and daily life.

This week in writing we continued our exploration of poetry as we learned about the different types of figurative language such as simile and metaphors. We also learned how to write an acrostic and list poem.

In Math we began using our knowledge of place value to tackle stacked addition problems
We need to remember to always start with the one's column and to regroup and carry a ten over to the ten's column when we have more then ten ones after adding the one's column.
We will continue working on this skill to solidify students' understanding of the addition process before moving on to subtraction.

Skate Shack

January 25, 2019

Hello Parents and Guardians!

The Royal Oak School Physical Education department is pleased to provide you with the opportunity to join us for an evening of Ice Skating. Please join us on either Tuesday, February 5th or Thursday, February 7th from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the Royal Oak Community outdoor rink. We will have skates and helmets available to borrow from the Skate Shack. There will be music, hot chocolate and coffee. We hope to see you there!

Kid Sport Calgary has generously donated the use of their Skate Shack, which is a trailer full of skates! The skate shack will provide us with child, youth and adult skates as well as helmets. You will need to sign out the equipment with one of our volunteers.  All persons on the ice during this time will be required to wear a helmet and the equipment will be available on a “first come, first served basis.”

All children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.  School staff will not be supervising this event.  If a child is coming with an adult other than their parent/guardian, they would not be able to participate unless they have a written note from their parent/guardian indicating that another parent/guardian will supervise them for this activity.

We are looking for volunteers to help setting up the music, managing the skate shack (handing out and bringing in the equipment).  Also, assistance is needed attending to the hot beverage area. If you are available to volunteer, please email our volunteer coordinator, Niki at ROSvolunteers@gmail.com.

Thank you for supporting the Physical Education program and I hope to see you all soon!

Week of January 20 - 25

Thank you to all of the families and students who came out to the Grade 2 Celebration of Learning last night.

This week in writing we began to explore poetry and how we can use it to communicate a purpose/messages through strong words. We discussed how poetry should make the reader feel something, wonder or think of something in a new way. Ask your child about how they can read and write like a poet.

In math we continued to explore the number line and discovered that we need to continue working on skip counting beyond 30 starting at different numbers. For example students can practice skip counting by 10 from 62 or counting by 2's from 73. To practice you can refer to the Mathletics assignment which will be open till Monday morning.

1) Food Bank Donations: Digital copies of the recipe book were sent out this morning to anyone who made a donation and supplied their email address.  If you would still like to contribute a minimum $5 dollar donation for a digital copy of the recipe book the students created, please send in your donation by Thursday January 31. Thank you for your support.

2) Mathletics: This week the students were given an assignment to complete on skip counting.  Students have till Monday to complete the assignment.  Log in cards were sent home with students last week.

Upcoming dates:
Feb 1st - No school
Feb 11th - 28th Alien in line skating
Feb 18th - No school due to Family Day
Feb 22nd - Pink shirt Day

Mathletics

Parents,

Your child is bringing home their log in card for a computer and/or ipad math program called Mathletics.  This online program is fully aligned with the Alberta Math curriculum.  It provides a place for extra practise and extension activities.  Students are welcome to use the program at any time to reinforce their math learning.  At certain times I may assign a specific activity to your child if I feel he/she needs some extra practise in order to master a concept.  If I assign a task it will pop up as soon as your child logs in.  Mathletics Live also lets your child compete again other students in timed math challenges for basic facts.  This is a fun way to practice and eventually commit to memory addition and subtraction facts.  If you have any questions please contact me.
